The sound of the room is going to be key. It's true C&V is on the dry side.

Edition Playtest Rules Of Soccer there. I disagree the sounds are dull or 'stylistically extreme', but I admit they don't immediately tick the genre boxes you've listed - rock, pop, RnB. The only other SDX I own that you are considering is Joe Barresi: Evil Drums. The sounds are great, contemporary and there are two different rooms to choose from. I've heard NY2 and the EZdrummer version of 'Music City' in person and I think the bass drums in Evil Drums are fuller sounding (as they are also in C&V). It's going to be a hard decision for others to make for you in the end.

The best I can suggest is listen to as many sound demos as you can, or visit a local store with a few of these sound packs for a hands on demo. As a long time DFHS 1.6 and Superior 2.0 user, I'd say that you'll want the NY Sessions 2 moreso than the Custom & Vintage for modern production. The Hit Factory and Allaire kits are very, very cool.

The kicks have that modern 'click' and the snares 'crack'. I like both better than the Avatar kicks and snares, although I do like the Avatar toms and cymbals. Custom & Vintage (and Vintage add-on) are phenomenal samples but they require quite a bit of EQ to bring them to 'life' IMO. They're excellent for 60's & 70's rock and pop, where the drums were more damped and had far less room going on than modern production. I haven't purchased the Nashville SDX but plan to pick it up in the future.

I haven't delved much at all into the Metal Foundry drums so I can't comment as to whether or not they'd be suitable for modern rock & pop, although those drum were a little 'flatter' than the NY Session and Avatar. Don't be afraid to detune the kicks and use EQ! Custom & Vintage (and Vintage add-on) are phenomenal samples but they require quite a bit of EQ to bring them to 'life' IMO. Yes, modern rock/pop production absolutely, but C&V isn't irelevant for 'modern' productions across the board. Don't forget there are a lot of productions using similar sounds - Air, Beck, plenty of hip-hop, trip-hop and other left field or dance music inspired genres.

I was just trying to help out the thread starter because I inferred from his query that he was looking for Modern Rock & Pop drums. I use the C&V and original DFHS drums for 'Vegas' style R&B, retro rock and even orchestral, and they're stellar. But with that said, I prefer the NY Sessions 2 for modern rock and pop.
